Giving Back by Planning Ahead

Giving Back by Planning Ahead

Genevieve Conroy is a savvy investor and knows from personal experience there's no better investment than Scripps. Her late husband, Richard Conroy, MD, was a devoted Scripps physician and spent 36 years caring for the community, including service as head of internal medicine at Scripps Clinic.

Married for 55 years before he passed away in 2012, the Conroy's first investment in Scripps was in 1969 when Dr. Conroy was recruited by renowned Scripps physician and leader Edmund Keeney, MD. After seeing the exciting advancements under way at Scripps – and the beautiful California coast – the couple moved from New York to La Jolla and never looked back.

Helping others was as much a priority for Genevieve as it was for Dr. Conroy, and she soon discovered that philanthropy would help accomplish her goals.

"Dick did so many wonderful things for so many people," Genevieve recalls fondly with a smile. "But I knew there was more we could do, and we felt so blessed to be with Scripps, we wanted to do something to honor that."

In addition to other generous gifts to Scripps, the couple set up a planned gift in 2008 that would help provide high quality health care for our community as well as generate steady, additional retirement income for them. The Conroys established a "two-life" charitable gift annuity, which allows two individuals to both receive lifetime annuity payments from Scripps in return for a transfer of assets, such as cash, stocks or real property. This means that Genevieve continues to receive annuity payments for her lifetime although Dr. Conroy passed away.

"It's a win-win," says Genevieve.

Genevieve continues to enjoy her family, traveling and volunteering when not at her computer monitoring the stock market for other smart investments.
